The Las Vegas Raiders are currently assessing their options for a new quarterback in the draft and have a clearer idea of the type of player they want. The team currently has two quarterbacks on the roster: Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell neither of whom excel at running.
As a result, the Raiders may look to favor quarterback options in the draft who have demonstrated some ability to move quickly on the field. Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams are two highly skilled runners who also have strong passing abilities, but they may not be available to the Las Vegas team. This has led to ESPN’s Matt Miller projecting that the team will select Oregon’s Bo Nix at No. 13.
Miller mentioned in a March 27 mock draftthat the Raiders could benefit from Nix's dual-threat playing style, which would align well with the team's new coordinator Luke Getsy. Additionally, the Raiders may also consider a right tackle or wide receiver at this spot, given their limited activity in free agency on the offensive side of the ball.
Nix showcased his rushing abilities 1,613 yards during his college years, proving himself to be a capable runner. Additionally, he holds an NCAA record for completion percentage (77.45%) in 2023.
Possible Concerns With Bo Nix
Bo Nix appears to be a promising quarterback based on his statistics, yet he is often not considered among the top prospects in the draft, ranking fifth or sixth. Despite throwing 45 touchdowns to three interceptions last season and starting 61 games, he is not viewed as a top-10 draft pick. Standing at 6-foot-2 and 214 pounds.
, Nix's age and college career length raise some doubts about his potential for further growth. Additionally, while he excelled in a well-structured Oregon offense, his performance was less impressive before transferring to Auburn, prompting concerns about his ability to handle challenges in the NFL. While he may be a compelling option for a second round pick, selecting him as a top-15 draft pick comes with significant risks.
Antonio Pierce Seeks a Mobile QB
One significant reason why Bo Nix might be a more practical choice for the Raiders compared to Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. stems from recent comments made by head coach Antonio Pierce, outlining his preferences for a quarterback.
During his media availability on March 25, Pierce emphasized the importance of having a mobile quarterback. Pierce said Nix has shown that he can excel as a runner, while Penix doesn’t possess the same level of mobility. Pierce elaborated on why having a mobile quarterback is crucial.
“Mobile quarterbacks are always challenging, as they can extend the play. For instance, Patrick Mahomes is a constant threat on the field because he prolongs the play, creating difficulties for the defense.”
The Las Vegas Raiders require more athleticism at the quarterback position, and there may be a viable option available to them at No. 13 in the draft.
