The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) wants people in Winnipeg to hand over traps that can kill animals in order to protect local wildlife and unintended victims.
The campaign comes from two incidents the animal welfare organization has witnessed recently. Both cases involved cats getting severely hurt in traps. One of the cats, a kitten named Enzo, had to have its leg amputated after getting caught in a snare. Both animals are getting better, but the humane society warns that the traps can be lethal.
“Traps don’t pick and choose. They don't have pity for wildlife or beloved pets,” WHS CEO Jessica Miller said.
“We encourage the public to report any illegal traps they come across to 311. To make sure that both animals and people are safe, we also keep pushing for clear and visible signs wherever new traps are set up outside the city.”
Miller said people can hand over illegal body grip or leg-hold traps, as well as other makeshift traps and snares, to the WHS facility on Hurst Way until April 10. As a bonus, anyone who brings in a trap is entered to win a $200 gift card for the WHS shop.
While snap and glue traps aren’t part of the campaign, the WHS says they can still be cruel or even fatal to animals.
