The residents of Omagwa and Ipo communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State are blocking the entrance of the Port Harcourt International Airport. They are unhappy about the lack of electricity and other facilities.
The protest has caused problems for flights, leaving air passengers stuck. It has also led to traffic congestion from the Airport Road to nearby communities.
The demonstrators, who gathered as early as 7am on Wednesday, expressed their frustration about not receiving any compensation despite living near the international airport and enduring daily noise pollution. They also complained about the absence of good schools in the area.
One of the protesters, identified as Oki, blamed the airport authorities for neglect, stating, “We in Omagwa and Ipo have been without electricity for over 10 years. We want to be compensated for the noise pollution from the airport every day. We are exhausted, and that's why we are here.”
