WILKES-BARRE — State lawmakers in the area revealed the acceptance of multiple grants as part of the Multimodal Transportation Infrastructure Plan on Tuesday.
The lawmakers stated that these grants represent a significant investment in improving the transportation system throughout the area, ensuring safer roads and better connection for residents.
The grants were authorized by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) through the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which offers funding to promote economic growth and guarantee the availability of a secure and dependable transportation system for Pennsylvania residents.
The grants, amounting to slightly over $3.65 million, will finance projects that cover a variety of efforts, including enhancements to street areas, roadway improvements, and access enhancements that address the diverse needs of communities in Luzerne County.
State Representative Eddie Day Pashinski announced that two projects in his district were granted $989,536 to enhance roadway safety in Luzerne County. The grants consist of:
• $500,000 to Wilkes-Barre for enhancements to the appearance of South Main Street.
• $489,536 to Bear Creek Village Borough for improvements to Route 115.
Haddock declared:
• $628,170 to Pittston Twp. for improvements to roadways on Armstrong Road within the CenterPoint Commerce & Trade Park.
• $449,498 to Jenkins Twp. to renovate parts of CenterPoint Boulevard in the CenterPoint Commerce & Trade Park.
• $437,498 to Moosic for enhancements to the appearance of Winfield and Birney avenues in the borough.
• $350,000 to improve transportation around Pittston Area High School, made possible by a $350,000 award to Pittston City.
Representative Dane Watro, R-Hazleton, and Senator Dave Argall, R-Pottsville, revealed the allocation of over $700,000 in state funding for street improvement projects in Hazleton and Mahanoy City. The grants are as follows:
• $300,000 for the City of Hazleton to use for Phase 3 enhancements to the appearance of Alter Street, between Second and Sixth streets within the city limits. The grant will be utilized for pavement repairs and upgrades to the sidewalks, curbs, and ADA-accessible ramps. New stormwater grates, trees, and decorative lighting will also be added to enhance the visual appeal of local businesses.
• $415,000 for Mahanoy City Borough to use for Phase 4 enhancements to the appearance of Main Street, between Market and Spruce streets.
Representative Mike Cabell, R-Butler Twp., announced the allocation of $250,000 in state funding for a street improvement project in Nuangola.
Cabell stated that the funding will be used for repaving Van Road in Nuangola Borough and Rice Twp., which is in critical need of repairs.
Cabell and Senator Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Twp., today revealed the allocation of nearly $355,000 in state funding for a street improvement project in Lehman Twp.
They stated that the funding will be used for the reconstruction of Market Street in the township and improve access to a school and other public facilities.
