New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll talked to the media on day two of the NFL League Meetings on March 26.
During a short Q&A, he said he's thinking about making two important changes to his coaching style in 2024. One of these changes could involve Daboll taking over as the offensive play-caller this season, and having Mike Kafka not do that job anymore.
Brian Daboll said this morning that he hasn't decided whether he will call plays this season or if Mike Kafka will do that. This was reported by a New York Post reporter. Paul Schwartz, a reporter, mentioned: “Daboll has brought Kafka into medical and schedule meetings to better prepare him to be a head coach one day.”Connor Hughes from SNY also quoted Daboll regarding offensive play-calling. “That hasn’t been decided yet,” Hughes conveyed, per the NYG HC.

Brian Daboll actually said that calling plays this season is ‘something I’m looking into.’ He noted there were 20 head coaches that were calling plays either offensively or defensively. Bottom line: It sure seems like Daboll will be calling plays this season for the Giants.

Daboll usually stays calm and reserved when speaking publicly in press conferences, but he can be explosive on the sidelines. On Tuesday morning, the Giants HC seemed aware of this critique that has caused disagreements with coaches and players in the past.

Mara’s comments about him “toning down” the sideline outbursts a bit this year. He said there is a self-evaluation process every year, and admitted that there are times when he wished he handled things differently.
He concluded that you have to “continue to grow” and “evolve” as an NFL coach. This could be another way Daboll tries to do that in 2024.

Earlier this offseason, the Giants locker room supported Daboll in a huge way, giving him an “A-” as a head coach despite the difficult season for the organization.
2024 NFLPA Report Cards , 100% of willing Giants participants agreed that “Daboll is efficient with their time” — which ranked “1st overall” — and more generally speaking, “players feel that Brian Daboll is very willing to listen to the locker room. Mara also gave Daboll a vote of confidence yesterday, speaking for ownership.

Mara did mention that he sometimes wishes Daboll would be calmer on the sidelines, but he also sees how he interacts with his coaches in the office and stays composed there.Mara said that Daboll does get worked up during games, but so does he.He firmly believes that Brian is the right person to lead the team going forward and wants him to stay true to himself.
Brian Daboll disclosed two potential changes for the Giants that would significantly differ from his coaching style in the first two seasons.
“Does he get excitable during the games sometimes? Yeah,” Mara reiterated. “[But] so do I.”
He eventually concluded that “I still very firmly believe that Brian is the right guy for us going forward.” And that he “want[s] him to be himself at the end of the day.”
