The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, Lawal Pedro (SAN), mentioned that the state is completely prepared for state police, and is just waiting for the signal to create it.
Pedro stated this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria at the sidelines of the 10th Ramadan Lecture organized by Anwar-ul Islam Old Students Association in Lagos. The lecture was titled “Economic insecurity in Nigeria: Islamic Solutions.”
The PUNCH It was reported that 16 state governors have submitted reports expressing their support for the establishment of state police to the National Economic Council.
They also recommended amendments to the constitution to permit the establishment of state police.
The reports were part of the documentation received at the 140th NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja last Thursday.
Similarly, the Attorney General of Lagos noted that he has been advocating for state police since 2001, in order to enhance state security.
“Since 2001, I have consistently argued that the security of this country can be addressed by having state police or community police.
“We are referring to a police system that is native to the people themselves.
Lagos is more than prepared for state police. I can guarantee that because we already have our own Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps in place and fully equipped, even with body cameras.
“I believe we are set to move forward in Lagos. I can confirm today that Lagos is ready, based on the actions of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“Just give the go-ahead and you will see our police officers on the road,” Pedro stated.
