Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White might join a Super Bowl contender after being released from the Buffalo Bills due to financial reasons, according to an expert's prediction.
The Buffalo Bills released White on March 6 to free up more than $30 million in salary cap space. White had been a key player in the team's defensive improvement since being drafted in 2017, but faced challenges with injuries in recent years.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has suggested that White could find a good fit with the San Francisco 49ers, the current NFC champions.
The Future is Uncertain for Tre’Davious White
White was known for being reliable and mostly injury-free, but he experienced two significant injuries. He suffered a torn ACL in 2021 and then a torn Achilles in 2022, which led to concerns about his future in the league.
Barnwell pointed out that teams might be cautious due to his injury history, similar to the situation with Jalen Ramsey. However, he also highlighted that White continued to perform at a high level after his initial injury.
According to Barnwell, White's performance limited opposing quarterbacks to a low passer rating in recent seasons, and he is expected to have recovered significantly from his injury by the start of 2024.
Barnwell mentioned that while the 49ers have strong cornerbacks, they have an opening for additional depth, which White could provide.
In San Francisco's defensive setup, White could take on the role of outside cornerback while rebuilding his strength following the Achilles injury, as per Barnwell.
After releasing White, the Bills have found new cornerbacks and solidified their secondary, ensuring continuity while keeping a top-notch nickel cornerback on the team.
Experienced Cornerback Set on Coming Back
White has demonstrated determination to recover from injury in the past. While rehabilitating his torn ACL, he took time for self-reflection and personal growth.
“I have more to offer than just playing football. I realized that I'm bigger than the game. I started exploring other aspects of life, reading, and understanding my purpose beyond football,” said White in 2022. ESPN. “So, it was the first time in my life I sat down and was like: Tre’Davious White, what else can I offer to people? I know I’m bigger than just a football game or just knocking a pass down. I started reading, started to get into a different space. Just learning about myself, learning about what’s my purpose here on earth other than playing a football game.”
