Super Eagles and Ihefu Sports Club central defender, Benjamin Tanimu, has shared that it was a dream coming true for him to represent Nigeria.
The 21-year-old centre-back has been highly regarded since his time at Bendel Insurance, which led to him being connected with various European clubs.
After scoring two goals in 19 games for Bendel Insurance in the NPFL 23/24 season, Tanimu moved to Tanzanian league side, Ihefu Sports Club, and has continued to improve as a young defender.
The Benin-born player is very skilled in the air and with the ball at his feet, and demonstrated this in the match against Ghana yesterday. He was included in the starting back three by Finidi George, where he played alongside Chidozie Awaziem and Semi Ajayi.
Tanimu performed well on the right side of the back three, allowing Bright Osayi-Samuel the freedom to move forward. He was substituted by Ademola Lookman in the 78th minute.
Goals from Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman secured the win for Finidi George in his first game as Nigeria’s coach, and Tanimu took to his Social media page to express how much wearing the Super Eagles jersey means to him.
“I am overjoyed today. The debut happened and I thank God for the opportunity to contribute in the little way I could. Thanks to the coaching staff, the entire support team, and the senior players for the warm welcome into the team,” the Ihefu SC defender posted on his X page.
The 1.83m tall defender also praised the Nigerian fans and media for their constant support.
“Thanks to my wonderful fans worldwide, the lovely Nigerians who have shown their love and support over the years. To the ever-insightful Nigerian Media, I commend you for your good work and I appreciate you all. Let’s continue to support the Eagles with our respective wings. This, for me, is a dream come true.”
Tanimu is hopeful to continue his strong start as a Nigerian international and become a regular in the coming years.
