The Philadelphia Eagles are adding more depth at the quarterback position behind Jalen Hurts, by signing a former journeyman quarterback Will Grier.
Grier. He is 28 years old and was with the New England Patriots‘ practice squad and the Los Angeles Chargers‘ practice squad.
While in Los Angeles, he was in the same quarterback group as Justin Herbert, and Grier played under Eagles’ new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
Grier’s signing was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Originally chosen by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Grier appeared in two games that season, completing 28-of-52 passing attempts for 228 yards.
The Eagles’ signing of Grier comes after the trade to get Kenny Pickett from the from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who will likely be Hurts’ main backup in the upcoming 2024 season.
Grier had two stints with Kenny Pickett when they were together with the Dallas Cowboys during the 2021 and 2022 NFL seasons.
However, Grier now has the chance to help Hurts and the other quarterbacks understand the new offensive system by working with Moore. Pickett Why Kenny Pickett is Excited to Sign with the Eagles
Pickett might not have the same chance to start in Philadelphia as he did during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being chosen in the first round of the 2022 draft, but he says he is excited to join the Eagles.
Pickett told reporters during his first press conference
that he wanted to go to a different team and continue improving his career. He also mentioned that he grew up in Philly and loves the game there, and is eager to meet the coaching staff and players on the team. During his first two seasons with the Steelers, Pickett was inconsistent, completing 62.6 percent of his passes for 4,474 yards with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He lost his starting job to Mason Rudolph in 2023, and the Steelers traded him after signing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. The Eagles have two years to see if Pickett can be their long-term backup quarterback or potentially trade him in the future. Pickett has two years left on his contract and will count $1.9 million against the cap in 2024 and $2.6 million in 2025.
