The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has alerted that their son is very sick while being held by the Department of State Services.
They said he urgently requires a heart specialist and asked President Bola Tinubu to prevent his death while in DSS custody.
Since 2021, Kanu has been held in custody after being brought to the country from Kenya.
Justice Binta Nyako rejected his bail request based on his worsening health condition on Tuesday.
In a statement on Saturday, Kanu's younger brother, Emmanuel, stated that he was told his brother was seriously ill.
Emmanuel mentioned that Kanu needs immediate medical attention to avoid a major health crisis.
The statement mentioned, "We received information this morning that he is very unwell. He has not been allowed to see his personal doctors, and he urgently needs a heart specialist. He should not be allowed to die in DSS custody".
Earlier, the family criticized the political leaders in the South-East for not intervening with the President to help secure their son's release.
They claimed that some individuals were benefiting from his continued imprisonment, thus explaining the seeming lack of interest from the political leaders to engage the President in securing his release.
“How come not one of the Igbo political leaders has contacted Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu's release almost a year after he came to power?
“Is this not intentional? Have they not been meeting with the President about other matters? It's shameful that Kanu is being punished for advocating for the freedom of Ndigbo, and the leaders have left him to die in DSS custody,” the family said.
