Members of the Nigerian Army have killed at least five militants while carrying out operations to clear areas in Borno State.
The operations to clear out areas conducted by the Combat Team on Friday led to the rescue of 78 abducted individuals, including 35 women and 43 children.
The troops successfully cleared out six villages where the militants were active.
The villages that were cleared include Ngurusoye, Sabon Gari, Mairamri 1 and 2, Bula Dalo, Bula Dalo extension, Yamanci, and Gargaji, all located in Borno State.
A statement released on Saturday by the Director of the Nigerian Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that this achievement was made following a fierce confrontation with the militants.
According to the statement, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army has been continuously targeting the remaining strongholds of the Islamic State of West African Province and their JAS counterparts in the North East of Nigeria.
The statement mentioned, “In a proactive sweep carried out on Friday, March 22, 2024, by a Combat Team of the Division, the troops effectively cleared out six villages where the militants were hiding with their captives.
“During the operation, the CT encountered the militants and engaged in a fierce combat, resulting in the elimination of five militants. The courageous troops also freed 78 individuals, including 35 women and 43 children who were being held captive by the militants.
The CT cleared out the enclaves and villages, which include Ngurusoye, Sabon Gari, Mairamri 1 and 2, Bula Dalo, and Bula Dalo extension. Additionally, other areas such as Yamanci and Gargaji general areas were also cleared. Recovered items consist of a terrorist’s flag and a mobile phone that belonged to the militants. The rescued individuals are under custody for initial investigation and profiling.
“The troops have been maintaining a strong offensive as part of the ongoing Operations Desert Sanity III to eliminate terrorists and insurgents from the North East region.”
The PUNCH reports that troops in different theaters of operations have eliminated numerous militants.
In the past week, the troops have also arrested 103 militants. killed 106 and detained 103 militants.
