The famous crossing at Portage Avenue and Main Street in Winnipeg will be open for pedestrians for the first time in over 40 years.
City officials approved the reopening of the intersection for pedestrians by 2025 with 11 votes in favor and 3 against.
At the moment, there are barriers that stop people from walking across the intersection, so they have to use an underground passage.
A city council report states that significant repairs are necessary for the underground walkway, as it leaks water after heavy rain.
These repairs will also cause traffic congestion above ground for a number of years.
Mayor Scott Gillingham believes that the city needs to make the right decisions for now and the future.
Over the years, large crowds have gathered at this intersection to mark important events, such as the end of a war and the return of the National Hockey League.
