The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former New York Giants wide receiver Parris Campbell to a one-year contract, a league source confirms to Heavy.
News of Campbell’s signing was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Campbell, 26, comes to Philadelphia after catching 117 passes for 1,087 yards and five touchdowns since being selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
After playing the first four seasons of his career in Indianapolis, Campbell joined the Giants before the 2023 season, where he played in 12 games, catching 20 passes for 104 yards.
The Impact of Parris Campbell on the Eagles’ Offense
In addition to signing All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley, general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles have made a concerted effort to add a veteran presence to Philadelphia’s receiving corps in Jalen Hurts‘ supporting cast.
Campbell joins a crowded room led by playmakers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith but alongside DeVante Parker, who also signed with the Eagles, creates competition for the No. 3 role and reliability on the depth chart.
At a minimum, Campbell is expected to contribute quality playing time and provide depth for a position group that had difficulty producing consistently outside of the two starters on the outside.
Campbell never quite moved up the Giants’ depth chart in the 2023 season, and as Pro Football Focus points out, he only averaged 3.4 yards after the catch per reception. However, Campbell did not drop a pass in 27 targets, which could help him become a more frequent target for Hurts.
Here’s a look at the Eagles’ current receiver depth chart:
Parker and Campbell have the potential to be significant improvements over Julio Jones, Quez Watkins, and Olamide Zaccheaus who all vied for the third-receiver spot last season but struggled to grow into consistent contributors.
By signing a one-year contract for the second straight offseason, Campbell can bet on himself in what has historically been a prolific passing offense in recent years, perhaps setting the stage to cash in once again in free agency in 2025.
Are Howie Roseman’s Moves Setting Up the Eagles for a Turnaround?
The Eagles are banking on this offseason’s acquisitions to change the direction of the franchise after losing five of six games to end the season and then getting crushed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Round.
NFL Network’s Judy Battista believes the stage is set for Philadelphia to make a comeback in 2024.
“It’s odd to say a playoff team needs a turnaround,” Battista writes for NFL.com. “But, the Eagles were plummeting in December and January, and they left the postseason with a humiliating 32-9 loss to the Bucs. That was Howie Roseman’s call to action, and he had a busy and successful first week of free agency.
“The big catch was signing running back Saquon Barkley, who should have a significant impact behind an offensive line that is much better than any he ever had with the Giants; Barkley should also provide a lot of easy completions for Jalen Hurts. And don’t underestimate the comeback of defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and the arrival of pass rusher Bryce Huff, both of whom should play a big role in improving a pass defense that ranked 31st last season.
