Wiig appeared on “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday night, to promote her new Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” now available for streaming. She has been friends with both Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon for a long time, so the NBC host commended the routine and asked how it came about.
According to Wiig, she and Ferrell spent a few hours trying to come up with different ideas, but couldn't figure out how to conclude any of them. Then, she played the song they danced to from her phone as a joke, and they just started dancing and laughing without saying anything. Then they wrote the script with the instruction 'Will and Kristen — music plays, music out,' and they were puzzled by it.
Wiig admitted that she and Ferrell mostly pleaded with the showrunners to trust that it would be funny, but “they were very confused.”
