On Wednesday, the United States transported its citizens out of the violence-affected capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, with more evacuations anticipated while the crisis continues.
The State Department revealed this information.
The US arranged for a helicopter to take around 15 citizens from Port-au-Prince, which has been heavily impacted by armed gangs, to the nearby Dominican Republic, as stated by the State Department.
According to Patel, they anticipate the helicopter making multiple trips to rescue as many American citizens as possible.
The State Department reported that about 30 citizens are expected to be transported each day, including Wednesday, via helicopter flights, which will depend on security and demand.
Patel mentioned that US government personnel will provide consular assistance in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and Americans will need to organize their own return travel to the United States.
On Sunday, the United States carried out a similar operation by flying 30 citizens to Florida from the relatively untouched city of Cap-Haitien via a chartered plane.
The State Department is considering whether to organize more flights out of Cap-Haitien.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has descended into virtual anarchy in recent weeks following a series of political, security, and health crises.
Last week, the United States, along with Caribbean leaders, pushed through a plan to replace the prime minister with a transitional council, in anticipation of the arrival of a security force led by Kenya.
