Strength in energy stocks assisted Canada’s primary stock index in rising slightly in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets had varying performance.
The S&P/TSX composite index increased by 5.28 points, reaching 21,842.46.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average increased by 165.78 points, reaching 38,956.21. The S&P 500 index decreased by 5.35 points, reaching 5,144.07, while the Nasdaq composite decreased by 76.33 points, reaching 16,027.12.
The Canadian dollar was valued at 73.57 cents US, compared to 73.85 cents US on Monday.
The May crude oil contract rose by 47 cents to US$82.63 per barrel and the April natural gas contract increased by six cents to US$1.76 per mmBTU.
The April gold contract decreased by US$7.20, reaching US$2,157.10 per ounce and the May copper contract decreased by five cents, reaching US$4.08 per pound.
