The Detroit Lions added some experienced players during the initial week of NFL free agency who are expected to help the team compete for a Super Bowl in the upcoming season. Then, to kick off the second week of free agency on March 18, the Lions agreed to a 1-year contract with guard Kevin Zeitler .
The specific financial terms of the agreement have not yet been revealed. However, Lions media and fans are generally reacting positively to the addition of Zeitler.
“The decision to sign Zeitler provides the Lions with an immediate ready-to-go starter at guard, in a year when they aim to compete for a Super Bowl,” The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy wrote. “It also allows them to keep their options open in the draft, enabling them to adhere to their draft board and select the best available player.”
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III spoke highly of the addition.
“Kevin Zeitler epitomizes a player who embodies a tough and determined approach,” Griffin wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He was performing pass-blocking maneuvers at the hospital while his wife was in labor.
“He will fit right in in Detroit.”
Kevin Zeitler is the embodiment of a “bite off knee caps” type of player. The man was doing pass blocking sets at the hospital while his wife was in labor. He will fit right in there in Detroit. https://t.co/xH5uKwXvKg pic.twitter.com/LWXxURN2LF

Griffin did not play with Zeitler, but they nearly crossed paths twice in the AFC North.
SB Nation’s Erik Schlitt also spoke positively about the signing. However, he conveyed some concern about Zeitler’s age.
“Though Zeitler is expected to be the starting player for now, there is a real possibility that he may face competition for his position,” Schlitt wrote. “Due to his age, it is evident that Zeitler is not a long-term solution for the Lions, which could lead them to use a high draft pick to strengthen their offensive line for the future.”
With Zeitler joining the team, the Lions have all five projected starting offensive linemen for 2024 under contract.
