More than 450 Jewish creatives, executives and other Hollywood professionals have put their names on an open letter denouncing criticizing the speech given by Jonathan Glazer, the director of “Zone of Interest,” at the Oscars after his film won Best International Feature. His comments on the Israel-Hamas war and the use of his Jewish identity and Holocaust history have sparked controversy since the 96th Academy Awards. The signatories of the letter include well-known figures such as Debra Messing, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Amy Pascal, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Eli Roth, and Sherry Lansing. Many of them have previously signed other letters in support of Israel following the nation's attack by the terrorist group Hamas.
Many have focused on a particular line from Glazer’s speech, in which he said, “We stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.” Some have interpreted this as him rejecting his Jewishness, rather than criticizing its use.
The group behind the open letter referenced Glazer’s Oscars night remarks in the letter, stating, “We reject the use of our Jewish identity to draw a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people and an Israeli nation that seeks to avoid its own extermination.”
They also stated, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years, and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history. It gives credence to the modern blood libel that fuels a growing anti-Jewish hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.”
On the other hand, Glazer has received support from other high-profile Hollywood personalities, including applause at the Academy Awards themselves. Among them, “Poor Things” star Mark Ruffalo enthusiastically applauded. However, the film’s executive producer
Danny Cohen is among those who have spoken out against Glazer’s comments After the initial controversial line, Glazer continued his speech, addressing both the victims of Hamas’ attack on Israel and Israel’s efforts to eliminate Hamas, which had caused considerable damage and casualties in Gaza. “Whether the victims of October 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?” Glazer stated as he accepted his Academy Award..
You can read the full letter and see the current signatories below:
We are Jewish creatives, executives, and Hollywood professionals.
We reject the use of our Jewish identity to draw a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that aimed to exterminate a race of people and an Israeli nation that seeks to prevent its own extermination.
While every civilian death in Gaza is tragic, Israel is not targeting civilians but rather targeting Hamas. The war will end when Hamas releases the hostages and surrenders, as it has been the case since the attacks by Hamas on October 7th.
Describing an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that goes back thousands of years as an “occupation,” and as a state recognized by the United Nations distorts history.
This supports the modern blood libel that fuels increasing anti-Jewish hatred worldwide, including in the United States and Hollywood. The current rise in antisemitism underscores the importance of the Jewish State of Israel, which always welcomes us, unlike any state did during the Holocaust portrayed in Mr. Glazer's film.
