Following a period of spring-like temperatures, the southern part of Alberta is forecasted to receive 15 to 25 cm of snow.
Earlier on Monday, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released a special weather statement warning of cold and snow heading to areas including Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Jasper, Banff, and Grande Cache.
ECCC stated that a cold front moving south through Alberta will bring temperatures below freezing on Tuesday.
The snow is expected to start on Tuesday evening and continue until Friday morning in certain areas.
In its special weather statement, ECCC mentioned, “Over 48 hours, snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres are anticipated for parts of western and southern Alberta. Higher totals are possible over the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.”
Meteorologist Tiffany Lizee from Global Calgary predicted the most substantial snowfall to occur on Wednesday and Thursday.
Lizee said, “We might see 30 cm (in Calgary) by the end of the workweek.”
She also noted that the southwestern regions of the province could experience over 30 cm of snow.
“So a significant amount of snow is on the way,” Lizee commented. “This will also lead to temperature changes: a 10-degree decrease in temperatures when we compare today's daytime highs to those of tomorrow.
“All things to be aware of and prepare for.
“Locate that snow shovel, the snow brush, your winter boots, and the kids’ heavy winter coats. It’s not like temperatures will be extremely cold, but after a 16-degree Monday, we will notice the cold.”
