The movie 'Kung Fu Panda 4' remained in first place at the box office in North America for its second weekend. The film, produced by Universal and DreamWorks Animation, made $30 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
The series, featuring the voice of Jack Black, has generated over $1.9 billion in box office revenue since its launch in 2008, leading to various spin-offs such as animated series, shorts, video games, and a holiday special. The latest installment, shown in 4,067 locations in North America, has already earned $107.7 million domestically.
Several new movies arrived in over 1,000 theaters this weekend, including Lionsgate’s “Arthur the King,” Focus Features’ “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” and A24’s “Love Lies Bleeding.”
The top spots on the charts were still occupied by established franchises, with “Dune: Part Two” coming in a very close second in its third weekend with $29.1 million. The film has now made $205.3 million domestically and nearly $500 million worldwide.
“Arthur the King” landed in third place with $7.5 million from 3,003 locations. The movie, based on a true story, follows an adventurer who forms a bond with a stray dog during a dangerous 435-mile trek in the Dominican Republic. The studio is hoping for positive word of mouth to boost sales in the coming weeks.
“Love Lies Bleeding” made $2.5 million in its opening weekend. The film, set in the 1980s, is a Western thriller about a gym manager and a bodybuilder passing through town.
“The American Society of Magical Negroes” made an estimated $1.3 million in its opening weekend. The satire, written and directed by Kobi Libii, explores a secret society dedicated to making white lives easier.
Following the Oscars, “Poor Things” added $2.3 million globally in its first weekend, bringing its total to $112.6 million.
Next weekend, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will be released in theaters.
Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, said, “When there’s not a newcomer dominating the marketplace, it makes for a rather slow weekend. Now we’re just waiting for ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.’ That combo should take us out of the month of March on a high note.”
He said: “We will need to be very patient until we reach May and 'The Fall Guy' and the summer movie season. However, there are some excellent movies on the horizon.”
Estimated ticket sales cover Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, as reported by Comscore. The final domestic numbers will be available on Monday.
