The National Judicial Council is alerting people about repeated efforts by fraudsters to scam retired judges in the country.
The Council said that fraudsters have been constantly calling retired judges, asking for money to speed up their retirement benefits.
In a statement on Sunday, the NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, made it clear that the council does not support the actions of these fraudsters and advised retired judges to be cautious.
The statement mentioned that the National Judicial Council has noticed the continuous phone calls to retired judges by dishonest individuals requesting payment to expedite the processing of their retirement benefits.
The National Judicial Council wants retired judges and the public to ignore these calls as they would never ask for money to fast track retirement benefit payments.
The public is urged to be cautious and report such calls to the Pension Department of the Council for necessary action.
The activities of fraudsters have seriously damaged the country’s reputation and caused significant harm to their victims.
According to the Financial Institutions Training Centre’s report for the third quarter of 2022, fraudulent activities in Nigeria increased by 207.9 percent in terms of the total amount lost.
The report stated that the amount rose to N3.6 billion in Q3 from N1.2 billion in the previous quarter, while the sum involved in fraud cases increased slightly by 9.5 percent to N9.62 billion.
