Those who were killed in a mass murder in Ottawa will be commemorated today at a multi-faith funeral service.
The public can attend the service, which will take place at 1 p.m. at the Infinity Convention Centre in the city.
Last week, six individuals, including four children, were discovered deceased in a townhouse in Ottawa’s south-end Barrhaven suburb.
Darshani Ekanayake, 35, and her four children, who were between two months and seven years old, along with a family friend, were among the victims.
Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, the husband and father of the children, sustained injuries to his hands and face and was taken to the hospital.
The organizers of the funeral said on Friday that he has asked for privacy to mourn his family's loss, but appreciates the support he has received.
The family were new arrivals to Canada from Sri Lanka, and their youngest child was born in the country.
A 19-year-old Sri Lankan man was arrested by the police on the evening of the attack and charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
The police stated that Febrio De-Zoysa, an international student who had been residing with the family at the time of their deaths.
De-Zoysa’s attorney, Ewan Lyttle, mentioned that his client is in protective custody and his family is clearly very distressed about the accusations.
