The initial FIFA ranking of the women's national teams for 2024 was officially published by the world football governing body, and the Super Falcons saw a decline, according to SUNDAY PUNCH.
Based on the rankings, the nine-time African champions moved down two positions from 32nd to 34th place.
However, the Falcons kept their strong position as the top team in Africa, retaining the prestigious title of being the number one team on the continent.
In the African rankings, the Falcons maintained the top position, followed by current African champions, South Africa, who moved up one spot to claim the 51st position as Banyana Banyana.
Morocco holds the third spot in Africa, occupying the 58th position in the world after moving up two places. Ghana is in fourth position after dropping five spots to become the fourth-ranked team in the continent and 65th globally.
Zambia, who rose by five places to secure the 65th position globally in the list, are the fifth best team in Africa.
Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Mali, and Equatorial Guinea complete the list of Africa's top 10 teams.
On the other hand, world champions Spain maintained their top position in the global rankings, followed by England, France, and the USA.
The slight decrease in the FIFA rankings for the Super Falcons does not reduce their status as one of the powerhouse teams in women's football on the continent. With their continued dominance in Africa and a solid presence on the global stage, the Falcons remain a strong force, ready to uphold Nigeria's legacy in women's football for years to come.
