MTN Nigeria Communications Limited has announced its plan to collaborate with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to distribute weather and climate details to farmers nationwide.
A press statement released by NiMet on Friday revealed this.
In February 2024, NiMet signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tomorrow.io, a major weather intelligence company based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with operations across Africa and the Middle East, leading to this partnership.
The two organizations are working together in various areas, including making weather data available for commercial use, enhancing the accuracy of weather and climate forecasts, and utilizing artificial intelligence in weather and climate information.
Tobechukwu Okigbo, the Chief Corporate Services & Sustainability Officer of MTN, expressed commitment to supporting national initiatives that enhance the well-being of Nigerians, as MTN has over 77 million people on its network.
Consequently, MTN is willing to assist NiMet's collaboration with Tomorrow.io to provide this service to farmers across Nigeria.
The collaboration is seen as a means to improve the nation’s food security, and both parties anticipate a fruitful working relationship.
Professor Charles Anosike, the Director-General and CEO of NiMet, highlighted that NiMet is responsible for gathering and sharing all meteorological data and information on behalf of the federal government of Nigeria.
The generated weather and climate data serve as essential planning tools for all Nigerians, including farmers and others in sectors like aviation, marine, oil and gas, construction, and academia.
NiMet is pleased to work with MTN Nigeria to distribute weather and climate details to farmers, supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes food security.
