The government of Saskatchewan is ready to start working on a $1.15 billion project to increase irrigation in the province.
Premier Scott Moe mentions that the province will begin the design work and talk to land users about the Lake Diefenbaker expansion project, and construction is expected to begin next year.
The project aims to provide more water from the lake for farmers to use.
Moe says the costs will be shared between the province and producers who want to take part.
He also mentions that the project is meant to help meet future food security needs as the global population grows.
The premier adds that it aims to improve the province’s agriculture economy, as farmers could grow crops with higher value.
