The new chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Tajudeen Baruwa, has requested President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to encourage his predecessor, Najeem Yasin, to move out of the national secretariat as directed by the court.
Baruwa appealed for this at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
This appeal follows the ruling of the National Industrial Court by Justice O.O. Oyewumi, confirming Baruwa as the legitimately re-elected president of the union.
Baruwa, represented by his lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, shared that it was crucial for Yasin to comply with the court order to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
He mentioned, “We are informed about a video on social media in which Alhaji Najeem Yasin assembled some individuals and informed them that the court is powerless. I want to caution Yasin that he should note there is a court directive prohibiting him from interfering in the union's operations.
“We are using this opportunity to urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Minister of Labour and Employment, Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 7, FCT Commissioner of Police to enforce the ruling of the National Industrial Court recognizing Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the valid and substantive elected President of NURTW.”
However, the new union president appealed to members of the union to stay calm, assuring that the relevant authorities would take the necessary steps to ensure compliance with the court ruling.
