More than 5,000 Edmonton civic workers are predicted to stop working this morning in a strike that will impact services such as criminal record checks and recreation centres.
Members of the Civic Service Union are scheduled to start their strike over contract talks at 11 a.m.
During the strike, Edmonton’s public libraries, library staff, administrative staff for the Edmonton Police Service, and the municipal government will all be affected.
Those planning to strike include emergency 911 operators, individuals conducting criminal record checks, and those handling firearms renewals.
Affected city staff comprise help-line operators, recreation centre employees, accounting staff, and clerks.
The union has not had a contract since 2020 and is seeking a three-year deal that would cover until 2023 with a five per cent increase.
Service disruptions are anticipated by the city. However, fire and rescue, transit, construction, snow-clearing, and waste collection will carry on.
The Civic Service Union last went on strike in 1976.
