Kim Rudd, a previous Liberal MP who represented a riding in southern Ontario, has passed away.
According to an online obituary, Rudd passed away from ovarian cancer on Tuesday at a hospice in Cobourg, Ont.
At the age of 66, Rudd served as the member of Parliament for the newly established Northumberland-Peterborough South riding from 2015 to 2019.
She held the position of parliamentary secretary to the natural resources minister.
Additionally, she chaired the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus and was a member of the House of Commons finance and natural resources committees.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences to Rudd’s family and friends, describing her as a “considerate and persistent supporter of Canadians.”
“She made progress on significant matters – from accessible housing to rural internet access to healthcare,” Trudeau stated.
“As parliamentary secretary to the minister of natural resources, she advocated for Canadian energy workers and contributed to advancements in climate action.”
Various Liberal cabinet members took to social media to offer their condolences, including Karina Gould, who is currently on maternity leave from her position as government House leader.
“I consider myself lucky to have had Kim as part of my life,” Gould shared on X, previously known as Twitter. “We were seat mates, neighbors, colleagues, and friends.
“Kim was a strong advocate, for her community and in her battle with cancer. She utilized her experience to champion Ovarian Cancer Canada and women’s health in general.”
Before entering politics, Rudd served as the president of the Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce.
Trudeau’s statement notes that she received an RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award in honor of her community leadership and was a co-founder of a childcare center in Cobourg.
The online obituary highlights her extensive involvement in public service and various local charitable organizations and sports groups.
Rudd is survived by her husband Tom, daughters Alison and Stefanie, and four grandchildren.
