Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, the Rector of Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, stated on Wednesday that the school is close to establishing an innovation center for teaching students practical skills.
He mentioned that the training focuses on making the school graduates entrepreneurs rather than adding to the country's unemployment rate.
Oluseye stated that the innovation center, which will start soon, will enable students to combine their studies with training in practical skills like manufacturing drones and air conditioners, drone piloting, and more.
He shared that the institution is dedicated to creating its first drone by the end of the year.
Oluseye made this announcement during the matriculation ceremony for over 3,000 new students for the 2023/2024 academic session at Prince Dapo Abiodun Twin Lecture Theatre of the institution.
He said, 'In our efforts to make our students stand out and become employers instead of job seekers, we are close to finalizing an MoU for an innovation center for the institution.'
'The world is already moving away from theoretical approaches. This center will be equipped to train students alongside their studies in practical skills such as manufacturing drones and air conditioners, piloting drones, and many other things.'
'This is a definite way to contribute to strengthening our local economy, and I anticipate that our first drone will be ready by the end of the year.'
However, the Rector cautioned the new students to avoid cultism, gangsterism, indecent dressing, and other antisocial behaviors that could hinder their academic success.
Oluseye urged them to be cautious of their friends and not to fall into negative associations that could disrupt their studies.
He stated, 'The institute's management has zero tolerance for all forms of antisocial behaviors, including exam misconduct, forgery, gangsterism, cultism, robbery, indecent dressing, and other societal problems.'
He prayed that the efforts of their parents or guardians will not be in vain but advised them to be careful in choosing friends so that peer pressure does not lead them astray.
He added, 'Remember that your time is limited, so it is crucial to make the best use of the opportunity you have. Do not allow distractions, and have the courage to pursue your dream and study diligently for success.'
The Rector also revealed that all 39 courses offered by the institute have been accredited.
He mentioned, 'We are affiliated with the CISCO Networking Academy for providing Professional Certificate in Information Technology (IT) Essentials CCNA 1,2,3,4 and CCNP.'
The rector outlined the construction of roads, upgrades to some of the deteriorating infrastructure in the institution, improvements to the school's security, and the payment of salary arrears as some of the interventions during his six-month-old administration.
