The Dallas Cowboys have not made any major moves in free agency, but they keep seeing ex-players join new teams like the Miami Dolphins. Neville Gallimore, a defensive tackle, is making a move to the AFC East.
The announcement of his signing was made on March 13 by Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Gehlken. It's not surprising that Gallimore is leaving as there hasn't been much talk about him coming back for a new contract.
“Former Cowboys DT Neville Gallimore has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dolphins, according to a source close to the situation,” Gehlken wrote on X.
Gallimore was a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and spent the last four seasons with the team. While his chances to start reduced after his first season in Dallas, he has been a steady presence on the defensive line lately.
Now, the Cowboys are under more pressure to strengthen the defensive line. Currently, they only have four defensive tackles and four defensive ends with prior experience (Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Sam Williams, Viliaimi Fehoko.)
Neville Gallimore’s NFL Career So Far
After being drafted from Oklahoma, Gallimore was given a starting role in 2020. As per Pro Football Reference, he impressed with four tackles for loss and a half-sack.
However, Gallimore started his second season with the Cowboys on injured reserve. The now 27-year-old missed the first 13 weeks of the season before returning for the final five games. He made four starts in that period, totaling 1.5 sacks and three tackles for loss.
In 2022, Gallimore set a career high with 33 tackles despite only starting one game. He also added another sack and pass defended to his record.
2023 was the first season for Gallimore in Dallas without a start. He did produce another sack and pass defended, but played 115 fewer snaps than he did in 2022.
The former Sooner has consistently performed well but has not yet had a standout year. It may not have happened with Dallas, but it could happen in Miami.
Running Out of Time for Cowboys to Decide on Release?
While Cowboys fans observe the team staying quiet, they should also be ready for another significant move. Dallas wide receiver Michael Gallup has been seen as a potential cut since the end of the 2023 season, but ESPN’s Todd Archer explains that the decision will probably come sooner rather than later.
“A decision on Michael Gallup’s future should come before 4 p.m. ET Saturday, $4m of his $8.5m salary is guaranteed if he is on the roster after that,” Archer wrote on X on March 13. “He has permission to seek a trade, and a pay cut is a possibility. As a June 1 release, Cowboys save $9.5m in cap space, but costs $8.7m in ’25”
Keeping Gallup on a pay cut could work, but it would need to be significantly lower than his $8.5 million salary. Furthermore, the Cowboys may just want to try their luck with a new WR in the draft instead of continuing to pay for Gallup’s average production.
