A man from Regina is in custody in Manitoba after being arrested by the RCMP in Portage la Prairie.
Police said they were called to a business on Saskatchewan Avenue in Portage on Monday afternoon due to a report of a shoplifter. The suspect was reportedly observed taking items from store shelves and putting them in a backpack, then running away on foot when confronted by staff.
The suspect was seen by officers near the business and was arrested without any trouble. Police said they searched him and found the stolen items, as well as a hidden replica gun.
The 30-year-old, police discovered, had an outstanding warrant in Calgary. He also faces additional charges of theft under $5,000, carrying a hidden weapon, and three counts of weapons possession against an order.
Police are still investigating.
