Spotify, a large music streaming service, revealed on Wednesday that it will start showing music videos on its platform in certain parts of the world, which is a space that has been mainly controlled by YouTube.
The company stated that the testing phase for music videos on Spotify will begin today.
It plans to release a small collection of popular songs from global artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, as well as favorites from specific regions.
Initially, the music videos will only be accessible to subscribers who pay for the service in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya.
In early February, Spotify announced it had surpassed 600 million monthly users, with 236 million of them being paying subscribers.
YouTube, a major streaming platform by Google, has traditionally been the leader in online music videos, with a significant portion of the platform's most-watched content being music videos.
Top tracks like Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” and K-pop star Psy’s viral hit “Gangnam Style” have each attracted billions of views.
Since its launch, Spotify has made substantial investments to drive its growth, including expansions into new markets and most recently, introducing exclusive content such as podcasts.
