The Kano State Hisbah Board has detained 11 Muslims for breaking the Ramadan fast by eating during the day.
The arrests occurred during the yearly Ramadan enforcement activities, which involved inspecting eateries and markets.
The board’s Public Relations Officer, Lawal Ibrahim, confirmed the arrests to the BBC Hausa Service, stating that they took place on Tuesday around the city, particularly near markets.
“The people detained include 10 men and one woman, who was found eating from her groundnut-selling stall,” he explained.
He clarified that non-Muslims are not subject to these enforcement actions, but if they sell food to Muslims during fasting hours, they may be seen as violating the rules.
“We arrested 11 individuals on Tuesday, including a woman selling groundnuts who was seen eating from her merchandise, after being reported by some individuals. The other 10 individuals were men and were apprehended around the city, especially near busy market areas.
“We do not detain non-Muslims because this does not concern them, and the only time they would be considered to have committed a crime is if we discover they are cooking food to sell to fasting Muslims,” he mentioned.
