Babatunde Laguda, the Technical Director of Yucateco Boxing League, has stated that the recently concluded female boxing championship was held to identify young female boxers in Nigeria.
The first-ever boxing league in Nigeria, Yucateco Boxing Promotions, organized an all-female boxing invitational championship at its headquarters in Ikorodu, Lagos State, where some of the top female boxers in the country participated.
Aishat Gbadamosi and Shakirat Kareem showcased their determination in a repeat of their challenge in Ibadan during Season One of the league.
Even though Gbadamosi was defeated by her opponent, she sees the all-female championship as an opportunity to advance in boxing and pursue greater prospects.
“This is a realization of my dream. I gained valuable experience from the championship and I aspire to continue improving with future opportunities. I want to express my gratitude to Yucateco for boosting our careers,” she said.
Commenting on the event, Laguda expressed, “We aim to build on the achievements of this edition. We noticed some of these girls at the boxing league and decided to provide them with a more focused platform to showcase their skills.
“We have identified several talented boxers from this event, and I can assure you that the future looks very promising for these girls,” he added.
Omonlei Imadu, the CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, is driven by the passion to promote the development of boxing across different genders and age groups in Nigeria. He hopes to encourage more female participation in the second season of the league, scheduled for the second quarter of 2024.
“What we have achieved is a qualifying championship for these young female boxers to secure a spot to compete in Season 2 of the Yucateco Boxing League. This event has helped us identify those talented enough to compete at the league level in May,” Imadu explained.
