Saudi Arabia has spotted the new moon for Ramadan, signaling the start of the long Islamic fast.
The announcement was made on Saudi Arabia's Twitter platform, @Haramaininfo, on Sunday.
The tweet said, “The Ramadan 1445/2024 crescent has been spotted in Saudi Arabia!
As a result, Ramadan 1445/2024 will begin tomorrow, 11 March 2024.
“Taraweeh Prayers will start in the Two Holy Mosques after Isha Prayers.”
The PUNCH reports The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has given the tentative dates of March 11 and March 12, 2024, for the start of Ramadan, pending the moon sighting after sunset on Sunday, March 10.
In a statement by Prof Salisu Shehu, Deputy Secretary General of the NSCIA, the Council urged Muslim Ummah to look for the Ramadan 1445 crescent on the given date, equivalent to 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH.
The NSCIA also urged Muslim faithful with credible moon sightings to inform members of the National Moon Sighting Committee.
However, as of the time of filing this report, the Sultan has not yet officially announced the start of fasting in Nigeria, despite the Saudi Arabia announcement.
