The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has found a shipment of illegal drugs hidden in the engine compartment of a bus, and two older men have been arrested for drug trafficking.
According to Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media & Advocacy for the agency, this information was revealed in a statement on Sunday.
The agency reported that they found 5.2kg of cannabis sativa and opioids in the engine compartment of a bus on Thursday, March 7, in Osun state. The bus was stopped by NDLEA officers on the Gbongan – Ibadan road during a routine search.
The bus driver, Iorliam Sughnen Dominic, 35, was taken into custody for further investigation after confessing to hiding the drugs.
On Wednesday, March 6, a 26-year-old woman named Obasanmi Esther Iyanu was arrested for producing and distributing skuchies in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state. A raid on her hideout resulted in the discovery of 16.5 liters of the illegal substance, as well as various quantities of molly and cannabis.
In Borno state, NDLEA operatives arrested a 70-year-old man named Mallam Mai Gemu Adam and a 65-year-old woman named Yamama Musa for drug trafficking. They were apprehended with 24-year-old Abubakar Ya’u and 28-year-old Babagana Abubakar Ali in Maiduguri and Gamboru-Ngala, along with 32,000 ampoules of tramadol injection.
On the same day, operatives in Yobe state intercepted a Golf 3 salon car heading to Gagamari in Niger republic. The occupant, Alhaji Mala Tijjani, 28, was found to be delivering 40 blocks of cannabis to another dealer. Additionally, 42 cartons containing 8,400 bottles of codeine syrup were recovered from a driver, Mutari Ya’u, 29, at Katsina road, Kaduna on Tuesday, March 5.
In Kano state, NDLEA reported the arrest of 35-year-old Nura Yusuf with 62kg of cannabis in the Gadar Tamburawa area, 40-year-old Abubakar Sani with 244 bottles of codeine syrup, and 28-year-old Mohammad Alkali with 49,800 pills of tramadol along the Kano-Maiduguri road on Thursday, March 7.
Similarly, NDLEA operatives in Lagos arrested Aba Thomas in the Igbo Elerin area of the state, where they seized 84 liters of skuchies, 1.1 liters of codeine syrup, 4kg of cannabis sativa, and 800 tramadol 225mg tablets from him.
The agency stated that on Friday, they arrested eight suspects during a raid on the notorious Karu abattoir drug joint in the FCT, Abuja. 51.3kg of cannabis was recovered from them. The arrested individuals include: Buhari Muhammadu; Jamilu Muhammed; Abubakar Wappa; Yahaya Tasiu; Ezekiel Mulanda; Abba Haruna; Habibu Umar and Shamsu Lawali.
In Plateau state, two suspects, Pam Thomas, 45, and Stephen Nyam, 38, were arrested on Monday, March 4, with 611.428kg of cannabis in Zawan, Jos South. In Kogi state, NDLEA officers intercepted a commercial J5 bus traveling from Onitsha, Anambra state to Zaria, Kaduna state on Wednesday, March 6th along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja expressway, where they seized a total of 8,580 pills of tramadol and exol-5 from a suspect, Yusuf Abdullahi, 40.
The police in Enugu raided some locked-up shops at the new market in Enugu metropolitan area on Tuesday 5th March. They found 371.42kg of cannabis and 9.49 grams of methamphetamine.
The NDLEA Commands in different parts of the country balanced their efforts to reduce drug supply with advocacy campaigns against drug abuse. They held WADA sensitisation lectures for students in various schools, and conducted advocacy visits to state First Ladies in Ekiti and Abia, among others.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the efforts of the Borno, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, Osun, Lagos, Plateau, Enugu, Yobe, and FCT Commands of the agency. He urged them and others nationwide to keep intensifying their efforts in reducing drug supply and demand.
