Ariana Grande’s music video for the second song from her new album, “Eternal Sunshine,” was released on Friday. It confirms the influence Grande drew from the mind-trip romance movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet.
The video shows Grande playing the character of Peaches, who is in the waiting room of Brighter Days Inc. filling out paperwork to erase memories of her ex, portrayed by Evan Peters, from her mind.
As Peaches prepares for a futuristic process to erase memories of Evan Peters, we see flashbacks of happier moments with him, like when he won her a teddy bear, they cuddled, made snow angels, and kissed over candles on a birthday cake.
The snow angel scene is reminiscent of a scene from “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” which is also used on the poster featuring Carrey and Winslet lying on cracking ice. You can watch the “Eternal Sunshine” scene here:
The birthday cake scene is a tribute to a romantic moment in John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles,” with Molly Ringwald and Michael Schoeffling.
In Charlie Kaufman’s script for the science-fiction film, directed by Michel Gondry, Carrey’s character discovers that his ex-girlfriend has had her memories of him erased. He then undergoes the same process, but records his memories before doing so.
Peters’ character doesn’t undergo the same process, but he and Grande walk past each other at the end of the video, both with new partners. They don’t acknowledge each other.
Ariana Grande's song “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” is the second single from her seventh album, “yes, and?” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
