Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and Iyaloja-General, emphasized the significance of women's involvement in the progress of the nation.
Tinubu-Ojo, speaking at this year's celebration of International Women's Day in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, on Friday, stressed the need for more women to collaborate with men for the advancement of the country. The 2024 theme for International Women's Day is 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress' #Inspire Inclusion.'
She believes that a peaceful and healthy family contributes to fostering strong connections and support within society.
She stated, "Women should continue to contribute to the nation's development. We must participate in the process of improving our immediate surroundings and the nation as a whole".
The state governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Mr. Olayide Adelami, pledged that his administration would implement policies to facilitate the progress of women in the state. He called on women to support him as he plans to run for the upcoming governorship election.
The governor expressed, "It is crucial that we create opportunities for our women to fully utilize their potential in achieving economic success, accessing necessary health services, and being empowered, as this aligns with this year's theme of inspiring inclusion."
He assured, "This administration will continue to provide all possible support to women in order for them to realize their full potential in all aspects of life".
In her statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Matters, Mrs. Olamide Falana, urged influential figures and authorities at all levels to find ways to empower women around them. She emphasized that women are more likely to thrive if properly empowered.
She remarked, "The era of women facing numerous challenges such as gender-based violence, sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, and disenfranchisement is coming to an end. Apart from their roles at home, women are involved in various areas of life—such as influencers, counselors, managers, networkers, communicators, enthusiasts, as well as being great mobilizers and campaigners in politics".
Falana stressed that even though women live in a male-dominated system, it is crucial to make systematic investments in women so that they can be liberated and make meaningful contributions to society, in line with the hashtag #Inspire Inclusion#.
She also highlighted that women should move past relying solely on financial incentives, which can be to the detriment of qualified, dynamic, and passionate women who are capable of taking on leadership roles.
She stated, "It is a call for women to take the lead and be exceptional. Only then can we be acknowledged and recommended for various leadership positions. We want to witness women ascending to admirable roles. Let our young girls no longer be pushed into early marriage, forced labor, or sexual slavery. These young girls of today are the future change ambassadors who will bring value to society".
