The former employees of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, demonstrated at the hospital premises on Friday because the management did not change its mind about laying them off.
Over 1,500 hospital employees were let go by the Federal Government due to reported irregularities in their hiring process.
They were protesting a notice from the hospital management about holding an exam for certain positions to be filled.
The demonstrators, who demanded the suspension of the exam, blocked the main entrances of the hospital, stopping people and vehicles from entering or leaving the complex.
A former employee, Samson Falope, informed the News Agency of Nigeria that the circular mentioned that the exam would take place on March 9 at the Command Day Secondary School in Army Barrack, Ede, Osun.
“What we found out was that the circular for the recruitment exercise under the June 2022 recruitment waiver had been issued, which caused the protest.
“The relevant ministry had been informed, and the House of Representatives and the National Assembly were also aware. We're just waiting for their intervention and resolution.
“We are optimistic that the exam will be halted indefinitely,” he stated.
The Public Relations Officer of OAUTHC, Miss Kemi Fasoto, informed NAN that the exam will be carried out as planned by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
