New information about the robbery at two banks in Kogi State last Thursday shows that a police officer and a security guard died in a gunfight with armed robbers.
The state Commissioner of Police, Bernard Onuoha, visited the crime scene in Ayingba on Friday and revealed this.
PUNCH online reported an attack on two banks around 5pm last Thursday with sporadic gunshots.
An eyewitness said that more than a dozen armed robbers came to the town to carry out a big robbery at some banks.
The state police command confirmed the police commissioner's visit and the deployment of tactical teams to restore order in a statement issued late Friday.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, explained that the Deputy Commissioner, Criminal Investigation Department has been directed to start investigating the incident to bring the criminals to justice.
The police statement said, “Following the Ayingba banks robbery and the attacks on police stations on Thursday 7/3/2024, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, CP Bethrand C. Onuoha, visited the scenes for on-the-spot assessment and promised to catch the criminals.
“He also ordered the deployment of tactical teams including PMF Personnel, Counter Terrorism, Quick Response and Intelligence Units along with other security agencies to restore order in the area.
The Commissioner of Police assured everyone of the command’s dedication to working with other security agencies and stakeholders to make Kogi State safe and secure for everyone.
The CP also urged the people of the state to continue working with security agencies and providing credible information about anyone they suspect in their neighborhood.
