The Detroit Lions seem to have many free agent choices at cornerback this offseason. However, they are also considering trading for a cornerback. The Lions Wire's Jeff Risdon suggested on March 8 that the Lions should get cornerback Greg Newsome from the Cleveland Browns.
Risdon suggested the Lions offer their No. 73 overall pick in the third round and a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Browns for Newsome.
“The Browns have three top CBs: Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson, and Greg Newsome. All three primarily play as outside cornerbacks,” Risdon explained. “The one to consider for the Lions trade is Newsome, who will be in his fourth season and will require a new contract if the Browns don't use his fifth-year option.”
Risdon also recommended that the Lions offer Newsome a 3-year, $41.5 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed after the trade.
“This amount is higher than what Over The Cap currently predicts as Newsome’s value but is similar to the salary for a starting outside cornerback in free agency,” Risdon stated.
In his three seasons with the Browns, Newsome has achieved 128 total tackles, including 4 tackles for loss, 29 pass defenses, and 2 interceptions.
Newsome made both interceptions and marked a career-best 14 pass defenses last season.
