A widely spread video on social media features a woman expressing her distress over receiving a demolition notice for her property in Lagos State, supposedly just two months after she moved in.
The video, which appeared on Monday, shows an unnamed woman in tears as she talks about the situation. It also includes a photo of a demolition notice dated May 7, 2024.
She mentioned, “We acquired that property in February, and we’ve only been residing there for two months. All the hard work, all the nights without sleep, everything… If you’re in Lagos, you’ll understand the high cost of property in Eti Osa.
“Whenever my son sees me crying, he always asks why. How can I explain this to our son? What do I say to my children? I’m making an effort to stay strong, but this is extremely painful.
“I don’t want anyone to work so hard and encounter something like this. I don’t.”
The video, shared on X.com on Monday by Spotlight Abby under the handle #Spotlight_Abby, has elicited reactions from internet users, with some showing empathy towards the couple and others criticizing the decision to invest in Lagos real estate given recent demolition incidents.
This has also raised concerns about the importance of thorough research before venturing into real estate investment in the state.
A user identified as Nneka Busy Body, using the #Nnekabusybody tag, commented, “While this is distressing, I’m somewhat puzzled. Considering the uncertain investment environment in Lagos and all the things we see and read about, you still bought property in Lagos in 2024? How? Why?”
Another user, tweeting anonymously as #ideniyor, wrote, “She and her husband brought it upon themselves. They purchased land without legal advice and proper research. Spare me the tears. The seller played a trick on them.”
This is not the first time property demolitions in Lagos have caused controversy.
PUNCH reported Last week, the residents of Mende Estate Villa in the Maryland area of Lagos State expressed their disappointment over the demolition of their multimillion-naira houses by the state government, while seeking compensation for alternative accommodation.
Addressing the issue, the state commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that the government had issued demolition notices to the residents of Mende Villa Estate in 2021 and 2023.
On Wednesday, Wahab, in a statement on X.com, also hinted that individuals who unlawfully construct buildings that are later demolished might soon be required to cover the demolition costs. post Watch video:
