A 43-year-old man named Akinyemi Ojo has been given a life sentence by an Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, for attempting to murder a woman on a farm.
Ojo appeared in court on January 25, 2023, facing a single charge of attempting murder.
The charge stated, “Akinyemi Ojo tried to murder David Faith by attacking her with a machete on December 5, 2022 in Aramoko Ekiti. This violates Section 241 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.”
During her testimony, the victim described seeing the man approaching with a cutlass in a threatening manner while she was on the farm. She suspected his intentions were malicious and fled when he pursued her.
“He chased after me, and when I fell, he repeatedly attacked me with a machete until I lost consciousness. Passersby found me in a pool of blood and took me to the General Hospital, Aramoko Ekiti. I don't know why he wanted to kill me,” she said.
The prosecutor, Taiwo Ajibulu-Ariyo, presented five witnesses and submitted statements from the defendant and victims, a cutlass, and photos of the victim as evidence. The defendant spoke in his defense through his lawyer and did not call any witnesses.
Judge Blessing Ajileye stated in the judgment, “The defendant macheted the victim, causing injuries that could have been fatal if it weren't for the intervention of passersby who saw her in a critical condition.
The judge announced, “In accordance with Section 241 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, the defendant is guilty as charged and is sentenced to life imprisonment.
