Pep Guardiola stated that he sees a chance to make history as he gets his Manchester City team ready for a possibly difficult match against Tottenham on Tuesday. The outcome of this match could ultimately determine who wins the Premier League title.
City, aiming for their fourth consecutive top-tier English league title, are one point behind leaders Arsenal, but importantly, they have one more game to play.
If City defeat Spurs, they will have the chance to secure the championship by winning against West Ham on the final day of the season, while Arsenal plays against Everton.
Guardiola’s team are moving quickly towards the end, scoring 28 goals in their last seven Premier League games and only conceding five times.
But Guardiola, who claimed to be enjoying the high-pressure title fight, refused to believe that the race was already practically finished.
Guardiola mentioned in Monday’s pre-match press conference, “Scoring fifteen goals (in four matches) is good, it helped us to be in this position, but it doesn’t give you an advantage for tomorrow when the game starts.”
“The mentality is straightforward, if we don’t win, we won't win the Premier League, and that is what we need to do,” he added.
City has never won a league game at Tottenham’s new stadium since it opened in 2019 and hasn't even scored a goal, although they did win there in the FA Cup in January.
Guardiola mentioned that despite his team’s poor record at the ground, they have performed well there on numerous occasions.
“But if you want to achieve something in this country that has never been achieved before, you have to do something extraordinary, I would say,” he remarked.
“It has never occurred in the Premier League. We have to do it this time. We are faced with a significant opportunity, and we have to acknowledge that we have not done it. It is time to do it, or else Arsenal will be the champions.”
Guardiola also expressed his “utmost respect” for Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, whose team still has a slight chance of securing a Champions League spot for the next season, although a win for Aston Villa against Liverpool later on Monday would end those hopes.
“The challenges are there, but at the same time, we know what we are playing for — to give ourselves the chance for the final home game depending on us,” he stated.
“This is the mindset that we have.”
