Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wore the necklace of Princess Diana, her late mother-in-law, a meaningful present from her husband, Prince Harry, during their trip to Nigeria.
It was reported that Meghan adorned the delicate diamond cross necklace, formerly belonging to Princess Diana, at a gathering for military families in Abuja, on Saturday.
Teamed with a St. Agni white strapless linen dress and her hair elegantly swept up, Meghan’s outfit made the necklace the main focus during the occasion.
The necklace, which has a delicate diamond cross on a gold chain, was a recent gift from Harry to his wife and was once owned by Princess Diana, according to People News.
They engaged in various activities such as visiting a school and playing volleyball with the Nigerian soldiers, among others.
She also received a warm welcome at the reception held at the Defence Headquarters Officers Mess where an official acknowledged Meghan’s Nigerian heritage in their address.
At the reception, the chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, referred to her as a Nigerian and said “Princess Meghan is a Nigerian!”
This was well received by the crowd, with the Duchess of Sussex herself smiling and applauding.
Meghan had previously shared on her podcast Archetypes that she discovered she is 43% Nigerian through a genealogy test. Throughout the trip, she spoke of the connection she feels to the country.
“Prince Harry, you married the best — our daughter, our friend, Princess Meghan,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “I hope you come back again, again and again.”
In response, Meghan expressed, “I am just flattered and honoured and inspired. It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived, and I very quickly got the memo that I need to wear more color, so I can fit in with all of you and your incredible fashion!
“I am very overwhelmed. So I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you’ve all been in welcoming my husband and me to this country,” she added, pausing briefly before adding to the applause, “my country.”
