Tobi Amusan, the current world record holder, became the fastest woman in the women’s 100m hurdles this year by clocking a swift 12.40s to secure victory at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational in Kingston, surpassing Jamaican and world champion, Danielle Williams.
During a major part of the race, Amusan trailed behind the reigning world champion Williams and America’s Nia Ali but then advanced in the final stages, surpassing the previous world-leading time of 12.42s set by Tonea Marshall of the USA on April 20.
Williams finished second with a time of 12.46s, while Christina Clemens of the USA took third place in 12.54s.
Yanique Thompson, another Jamaican athlete, secured fourth place in 12.59s while Ali slipped to fifth with a time of 12.65s.
Amusan and other notable athletes chose to skip the Doha Diamond League in favor of attending the Jamaica Invitational.
The Nigerian concluded the previous season on a positive note by claiming victory in the Diamond League in Eugene, Oregon for the third consecutive time, silencing critics regarding her underwhelming performance at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest where she finished fifth and lost the title to Williams.
