The recently founded Muhammad Kamaludeen University in Ilorin, Kwara State has announced that it wants to offer $1,000 in initial funds for students who are interested in starting their own businesses.
The university's vice chancellor, Prof. Rasheed Jimoh, mentioned this during the first-ever matriculation of 146 pioneer students.
The VC explained that the university created this plan to prepare the students for global competition by promoting critical thinking.
He also mentioned, "One of the initiatives is the creation of new courses such as MKU-GS 112 – Initiative thinking and idea creation, designed to equip our students with essential entrepreneurial and innovative skills from their first semester to navigate the emerging economy smoothly.
“As a follow-up to this course, the university will help teams of students register startup companies for selected viable ideas through the Corporate Affairs Commission and support the startups with investments. The aim is to have MKU's startups with over $1,000 before registration. The university has engaged an international expert to teach this course.
Jimoh added that the university has started with 15 approved academic programs and is confident that by October this year, they will admit another set of students for new programs.
A former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, revealed that she donated a building valued at N50m to the new university.
The matriculation ceremony also included the installation of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, as the Chancellor, and the appointment of a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Shuaib AbdulRaheem, as the university's pro-chancellor.
In his speech, the chancellor encouraged those seeking university admission to take advantage of the uniqueness of MKU.
The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, was represented at the event by his Senior Adviser/Counsellor, Alhaji Saadu Salahu.
