The Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, said that the abduction of students at Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, was due to internal sabotage.
He mentioned that early investigations found that all the CCTV cameras at the school were turned off during the attack.
Nevertheless, he promised to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
Ododo revealed this information during his visit to the university campus to assess the security situation following the breach that resulted in the students' abduction.
He reassured everyone that every necessary measure, including non-violent actions, has been taken to guarantee the safe return of the abducted students.
While assuring the university community of the government's efforts to enhance campus security, Ododo pledged to do everything possible to bring back the abducted students to the university and reunite them with their families and friends.
“As a government, it is our responsibility to protect lives and property across the state. We have made provisions to protect the students, which is why they were allowed to stay on the campus.
“Despite the installation of CCTV cameras in all the classrooms and around the entire perimeter of the university campus, our investigation revealed that all the cameras were turned off on the day of the attack, indicating internal collaboration in the sabotage.
“Our security agencies are working diligently and the investigation is ongoing. All our students will return safely, and the culprits will be held accountable,” assured the governor.
In addition, Ododo stated that there will be regular reviews of the rescue operation as more details are uncovered from the investigation.
He said, “I am here to personally assess the situation and review the ongoing operation to ensure the safe return of the students to the school. The priority now is to rescue our students unharmed.
“We have relevant information which cannot be disclosed to the media. I urge the parents and students to remain calm as we are working together to secure the students’ return.”
He praised the security agencies for their bravery in minimizing the impact of the attack by preventing the attackers from accessing the university hotels. He emphasized that every effort will be made to bring back the students and prevent a similar attack on the university campus and other areas in the state.
On Thursday night, some gunmen stormed the campus and kidnapped several students and staff.
