Emeka Offor, a person who gives money to help others, donated N100m for the growth of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka on Saturday.
Offor, who is the head of Chrome Group of Companies, gave the money shortly after receiving an honorary degree from UNN in Nsukka.
As per a statement by Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Offor, represented Chief Steve Ahaneku, mentioned that the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe, will be contacted later to discuss how the money will be used for development at the university.
He mentioned that his foundation, Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, has been actively supporting education, health, and youth empowerment, and has provided UNN with a large number of books in various fields through Books for Africa.
He also stated that his foundation and Books for Africa have given books worth $30 million to institutions in 18 African countries in subjects like law, computer science, business administration, and political science.
Offor also mentioned that during the COVID-19 pandemic, his foundation donated 100 fully equipped hospital beds to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, near Enugu, to support good health for Nigerians.
He recalled that in 2010, the foundation provided N20 million for a professorial chair at UNN, and mentioned that a comprehensive report on the activities related to the endowed chair has not been shared for a while.
He expressed his gratitude to the institution for honoring him and his group.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Charles Igwe, earlier stated that the university carefully selected outstanding individuals who met specific criteria for receiving honorary degrees from UNN.
Before Offor’s citation, Igwe mentioned that Offor, as a former student and a strong representative of the institution, has excelled in the oil and gas industries and other fields.
He also said, “Sir Emeka Offor has done exceptionally well in all his endeavors and is a great example of simplicity, humility, and someone who works to uplift humanity as a whole.”
In response, Igwe Austine Ndigwe, Eze-Uzu III of Awka Ancient Kingdom, stated that Offor deserves the award due to his numerous charitable activities and generosity, adding that Offor gives without any limits.
Ndigwe urged Nigerians to follow Offor's selfless giving spirit, stating, “Due to his generous nature and positive impact on many people, God continues to bless Sir Emeka Offor.”
Chief Ikenna Ofodeme, the Majority Leader of Anambra State House of Assembly, expressed that Offor has been a great blessing to humanity and has contributed significantly to the development of communities and institutions in the country.
Ofodeme, who represents Ekwusigo State Constituency, expressed pride in their association with Offor, describing him as a leading philanthropist and a source of pride for the people of Anambra.
Offor and three others were given honorary doctorate degrees from UNN.
