The Dallas Cowboys have not yet agreed on a contract extension with quarterback Dak Prescott. Prescott's contract is ending soon, and he might become a free agent next year. Considering potential replacements for Prescott, K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire suggested Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins.
might be a good fit. “Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 and excelled in multiple passing categories in 2022,” Drummond wrote in an article on May 8. He also mentioned Tagovailoa playing with a strong supporting cast including Odell Beckham, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and the Raheem Mostert-Devon Achane RB combo.
Drummond suggested that the Dolphins could be a potential landing spot for Prescott, hinting at a possible quarterback exchange between the two teams in free agency.
Both the Dolphins and Cowboys are in similar situations with their quarterbacks, raising questions about their future at the position.
'Serious negotiations have begun' for contract talks between the Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Miami Dolphins and Tagovailoa have started discussing a potential contract.
“Negotiations have started in earnest. The Dolphins have initiated the process,” Fowler said Fowler said
. Although a deal is not imminent, the Dolphins are dedicated to reaching an agreement.
“I don't think a deal is about to happen, but the Dolphins are determined. Their actions this offseason indicate they are willing to pay him,” Fowler added.
Spotrac predicted in February that Tagovailoa could sign a four-year, $220 million contract extension with the Dolphins, which would guarantee $105 million at signing.
How Tagovailoa Would Benefit the Dallas Cowboys
If Tagovailoa joined the Dallas Cowboys next year, he would provide similar statistics to Prescott.
The 26-year-old from Alabama led the league in passing yards this year with 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Prescott, who is 30, threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Like the Miami Dolphins, the Cowboys have top offensive weapons. Tagovailoa’s Miami offense includes Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddleas well as other top wide receivers.
The Cowboys’ key players are CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooksand others.
Although Prescott and Tagovailoa had similar performances last season, Tagovailoa is four years younger, which could attract the Cowboys if they choose not to sign Prescott and Tagovailoa becomes available.
In January, Kinnu Singh from FanSided suggested Prescott as the top choice when looking for replacements for Tagovailoa.
The 2023 NFL season was one of Prescott’s best seasons. For the Dolphins, getting Prescott would be an improvement over Tua, Singh wroteHe has proven he can throw long passes to fast receivers and could benefit from Miami’s dynamic offensive playmakers.
It's not common for both teams to exchange quarterbacks, but given the situation, it wouldn't be the most unexpected result.
